Ok , the announcement is in and the dust has settled down . Now for the time to sit and analyze it . Yes , Google is in everything and everywhere , one of the biggest and trusted brands of this decade ! For me a more personal association . I have been on gmail for ages , I use google apps for my own domain emails also and feedburner and what not . So I am not an anti-google guy . I have all going for google .If there was ever a google loyal it is me . But then , I am unable to stop myself from thinking about the OS that google is all set to launch and hit the netbook market . Is it an OS in the real sense of the word ? Disturbing as it sounds , I have reason to believe that all this din is not worth it . We and all the tech gurus are acting too fast in accepting an OS . But hear me out a bit here …
Look at the vital parts of the news , the first is that the OS will have a LINUX Kernel , that means that there is not gonna be a rewrite from scratch . There will be an existing linux kernel that is taken for this . Next is what do we know about Chrome already ? It is a browser . All of us know that a browser cannot play around with the system resources beyond a point . Also the words “Brand New Windowing system” kinda sound ominously resembling a desktop manager , like Gnome or KDE or the ilk . Re-writing an entire OS takes years and years of effort , and it is one mean re-write . Unless you want to revolutionize the way the system interacts with devices or other resources it does not make sense . Is that what Google is planning ? That would not make entire business sense now
So then , we may be looking at a Linux Kernel with a Chrome Desktop Manager with a rehashed , faster and incredibly loaded version of the browser sitting on top of it . They may have a UI that lends better to blogging/emailing/downloading etc .Looking at that , all the din is just about another Desktop Manager / shell coming out with a Linux Kernel . There are people in the open source world who have been doing this for ages . Nothing new there ! I think that we are so slanted into our Google vs Microsoft battle that we are kinda hailing even small things as huge things and making a fuss about them .
Then if the above logic makes sense , it also makes sense to understand the apps working with the new OS. They already have Linux versions or are working on them . Ain’t that simple . But then , this entire post might become conjecture if Google really is writing a new OS bottom up . They are quite capable of that and they just may do that !
